PBM-5G
c 1950's

This aircraft was assigned to Salem (Winter Island). Note that she is using Jet Assist Take Off(JATO). In trying to determine the era I was sent the following "Coast Guard received PBM-3s at the end of 1943 and the last exited service in 1946, Coast Guard had PBM-5s prior to 1946 but when the CG headed up the Air Sea Rescue agency in 1944 the paint scheme on the aircraft was such that there was a star on the fuselage in the area of the motor mount and a rescue number under the pilot window (this was the call sign of the aircraft ie CG Rescue 22 etc).

After revised Search and Rescue agreement of 1951 the livery no longer had call signs painted on it and the star was moved forward to approximately under the window. The PBM [in this image] has the star in a position approximately under the window. Thus the picture in question would be one of a Coast Guard PBM-5G.(JM)

PBY-6A

"These were produced during 1944-45. They had an increase in fuel capacity over the PBY-5A and were equipped with a search radome located above the cockpit. They were amphibians." (JM)

Probably pre 1943 as there are no barracks, admin building or sickbay. Caption says.

PBM-5G
C 1950 Salem (Winter Island)

I have been told "...it is sitting on a ramp with beaching gear attached - thus not an amphibian. The ramp looks to be Salem. I would imagine, however, if the picture is at Salem and it had been prior to 1946 (Days of the last PBM-3s) that the ramp would have been much more crowded that that. After WWII when the CG was flying all SAR for Navy stateside - the CG had many many aircraft at all air stations." (JM)

JOHN KLEMM BEING SWORN IN AS HIS FATHER, ATC HAROLD KLEMM FROM CGAS SALEM LOOKS ON

John was 17 years old when sworn in and immediately left for Cape May and went on to a succesful 30 year career doing 19 years in aviation and 11 years in general service. He retired in 1980. His father, Harold, retired in 1954 with 25 years service and passed away in 1976. There's more to the story - Johns youngest son retired as an E-9 having completed 30 years and his brother, Frank, did 22 years in the CG and 4 in the Marines. His older brother did 30 years in the Marines retiring as a SgtMaj. His oldest son did 24 years in the Marines retiring as a Major AND he has 2 nephews serving in the Coast Guard. Talk about a military family - he has to take top honors!

The crew at Arlington(Wash. Natl). We had 2 Martin 404's and a DC3. Later the DC3 was replaced by the Grumman G-1.

Arlington was commissioned on February 20, 1952. In 1974, Air Station Arlington changed its name to Air Station Washington in recognition of its location at Washington National Airport.
